What do families ask most?
How are long-term care costs projected? ▼
Projections use the current state-level cost data from CareScout 2025 and apply a 4.5% annual inflation rate, which reflects the historical average cost increase for elder care services. Actual costs may vary based on local market conditions, level of care needed, and facility quality.
What is the difference between care types? ▼
Home Care provides assistance with daily activities in your home. Adult Day Care offers daytime supervision and activities at a center. Assisted Living provides housing with personal care services. Nursing Homes (semi-private/private) offer 24-hour skilled nursing care in shared or private rooms.
Does Medicare cover long-term care? ▼
Medicare generally does NOT cover long-term custodial care. It covers limited skilled nursing facility stays (up to 100 days after a qualifying hospital stay) and limited home health services. Long-term care is primarily funded through Medicaid (for those who qualify), long-term care insurance, or out-of-pocket savings.
How can I pay for long-term care? ▼
Common funding sources include: personal savings and investments, long-term care insurance (best purchased before age 60), Medicaid (requires meeting income/asset limits), Veterans Aid & Attendance benefits, reverse mortgages, and life insurance policy conversions. An elder law attorney can help with Medicaid planning.
